-Langston Hughes

On November 14, 1960 Ruby Bridges was one of the first Black students to participate in the integration of the New Orleans school system at William Frantz Elementary School. When she walked into the building, parents began taking their children out of the school. Teachers refused to teach while a Black child was enrolled, so teacher Barbara Henry was brought in from Boston to teach little Ruby, alone, for over a year. Due to constant threats by students, parents, and faculty alike President Eisenhower had no choice but to dispatch Federal Marshals to ensure her safety. Here she is seen exiting the building with those three marshals. An undoubtedly powerful picture.
